Love thy neighbour – just not if it involves building plans and party walls

June 14, 2010

Neighbours on both sides of our house have thrown large, clattering spanners in our building works, lodging official and lengthy objections with the council’s planning department. We’re completely gobsmacked, not only by the specific objections they’ve raised but also the manner in which they’ve done it.

I’m currently spitting tacks. And for now, I will refrain from going in to detail about their objections as a) I’m too cross and b) I need to find out what our legal situation is before I start ranting about people who wouldn’t know either good design or financial benefits if they got up and hit them in their curmudgeonly faces.

“Love thy neighbour” should come with the clear caveat “unless it involves building plans and party walls”.

Today’s observation: always live in detached houses, not terraced ones.

Sorry to hear that, what a pain. I’m sure you’ve thought of this, but worth speaking to the duty planner in your local council, just see what they think?

Well, also happens in the UK. My wife and I are going through the exact nightmare trying to renovate a small semi in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. By the number of neighbour objections, you would think we are building the Taj Mahal! And our reno is not even in the same category as some of the monstrosities they have built in the street. And they have the audacity to object to our reno, which by the way, has been heartily endorsed by our local Council. Unbelievable….some people seem to have nothing else to do in life. In Sydney we have a name for such people..: NIMBY…(not in my backyard). We have had objection 4 houses down! How on earth could our reno affect them? We feel for you, Emma. Hope all will work out for you….and us

But at least in Sydney you have lovely weather and great food! The UK tends to be far too cold and overpriced for my liking!
